Top ten common questions for beginner reverse 4’s volleyball!

Due to popular request from many of you, we’re sharing top 10 FAQs regarding FTLO’s beginner-level tournaments!

What is Grass Reverse 4s?
A: Co-ed 4 vs 4. Males can only jump and attack from behind the 3m line; females can play freely. You don’t need to master the format—just show up ready to learn and have fun. (Video links and modified rule sheets below)

1. What time does it start? How many games will we play?
A: Check-in is typically at 8:45 AM. There’s a lunch break around 11:30–12:30 (BYO-Food). We usually wrap up between 2:00–4:30 PM. You’ll play at least 4–6 matches, depending on the schedule. Helps to bring a canopy for shade coverage between matches too!

2. I’m a complete beginner. How could a tournament possibly be right for me?
A: If you can move your feet and try to touch the ball, you’re in the right place. This division is built specifically for beginners AND recreational-paced FTLOers.

3. I don’t know anyone. Can I still sign up?
A: Absolutely. It’s exactly why you should sign up. You can sign up solo or with a friend—we’ll match you with others to form a team asap.

4. My partner and I are beginners. Can we ask two stronger players to join our team?
A: Yes, but intermediate players should take support roles (like setting). Our coordinators will help ensure matches stay fun and fair for everyone.

5. What are the rules? I don’t know any!

A: Games start with a serve (underhand or overhand), then you just try to keep the ball off the grass. Rules are very beginner-friendly. Call your own violations if any. Lifts and double contacts are generally ignored (unless you’re in the finals) No open hand tipping so try and smack or set it over! Full details are in the registration link.

6. How does rotation work in R4s?
A: You don’t rotate positions—just stick to a consistent serving order.

7. Do I need special shoes or equipment? Can others come watch?
A: Nope. Just wear comfortable athletic shoes (no cleats), and bring water, sunscreen, and whatever you need to stay comfortable outside. Respectful spectators highly encouraged!

8. There’s a net rule?

A: Yes, don’t touch it. That’s considered interference aka cheating ;). Rules inside tournament link!

9. What happens if it rains?
A: We’ll notify you early if the tournament is cancelled due to weather. Link.

10. Are there prizes?
A: Yes, but this tournament is about learning and building confidence.

The hardest part is saying yes, then the most rewarding part (besides potential sunburns) are the relationships made and experiences gained!
