While FTLO is a registered Not-for-Profit organization who includes adults of all abilities, its programs cater to various specific levels of experiences and skills to ensure the best combination of challenge and fun.

FTLO’s training and leagues are for adults interested in playing in a stress and conflict-free, development focused, high fun environment.

B, BB, A, AA Experiences Explained

Players and user groups may use the descriptions below as a reference point for which level of play is most appropriate

B - Beginner

Adults with little to basic volleyball skills or formal team play. B level provides fun and engaging training environments for adults to learn and re-learn foundational habits and confidence for all basic volleyball skills required to have meaningful rallies*. Adults may train at this level for multiple seasons to develop foundational skill confidence.

At this Level: Rallies are short and developing but not as consistent. Focus is on movement confidence and confident first contact. All players play each position in rotation.

Development: All foundational skills at high-volume repetitions. Consistency of the first pass and set contacts, serving and spiking mechanics, Introduction of team game play and learning to sustain 3-contact play. Beginner Clinics are recommended.

*Note. Meaningful rallies include 2-3 contacts per team before sending the ball over the net, as opposed to rallies that end from a single contact play (Ie. Missed serve, ace, ‘shanked’/poor first contact, or first ball over)

BB - Recreational

Rally Ready players. Players who can pass, set, and hit at a recreational team play pace or in a controlled training environment. BB level builds on top of fundamental skills, integrating 6’s or 4’s team play, and may start to play in specific positions and roles on the court.

At this level: Players in this level are Rally Ready, can sustain (but are also improving on) multiple contacts with each recreational rally.  Receiving serves and attacks may still cause more challenges, but players are making movements in the right direction and demonstrating understanding in setting up 3 contacts. Players continue to strengthen their overall skills while beginning to play positions and roles of the court.

Development: Directional passing, consistent serving, and spiking mechanics. Players learn to move better in space to read the ball, recognizing their role on the court. Clinics include Beginner for more technique breakdown and/or Intermediate Clinics.

BB+ - Lower Intermediate

Confident Rally Ready and System Ready Players: Adults who are confident and consistent with their foundational skills in 6-on-6 game play. BB+ players can maintain rallies at an intermediate pace (faster servers and hits), understanding system play, and contribute within specific roles (e.g., setter, middle, libero, hitter). This is often the level where team systems like 5-1 or 6-2 are used more intentionally.

At this level: Players can demonstrate off-ball movement, can read and recover in broken rallies, and execute basic team offense/defense strategies. They can consistently attack the ball over the net in controlled settings. Rallies are consistent and include transitions, resets, and role-specific communication and movements.

Development: Responsive movements to team play, strengthening of all fundamentals in faster pace + blocking and digging, roles and responsibilities during rallies. Clinics include Intermediate or Position-Specific Clinics.

A - Intermediate

Competition Ready. A level adults may have prior high school gr.8-10 competitive volleyball team experiences. They may also have sport-transferable experiences from similar competitive sports. A-level players should be playing in comp. leagues which involve faster serves, spikes, blocks. Adults may be competing at this level for many seasons.

At this level: Players have assigned positions and can sustain meaningful rallies most of the time while facing some challenges with faster paced attacks; similar to a 15U Tier 1 club team. This is the highest level to reach currently with FTLO programming.

Development: Fine tune individual and team strategies and systems. High volume quality repetitions with focus on 2 or 3 aspects and strategies.

AA - Advanced

Advanced Competition Ready. Adults with equivalent of gr.10-12 comptetitive volleyball team experience, or those who may have extensive training and competition experience.

At this level: Competition is high. Rallies are fast paced with strong attacks and defenses. Not much coaching may be needed because of the years of habits, reps, and experiences.

Development: Fine tune 1 aspect at a time. Private coaching and training is recommended to advance further to AAA/Open Level (Post-Secondary Volleyball Athletes)
